What is welding fume?
Welding fume is the fine particulate generated when metal and consumables are vaporised at the arc and then condense in air as metal oxide particles. It typically includes a mix of base-metal oxides, consumable-derived metals such as manganese, and — depending on the work — chromium, nickel, zinc and other constituents. The particles are mostly in the respirable size range and can reach the deep lung.
Is mild steel welding fume now treated as hazardous in the UK?
Yes. Since 2019, HSE has set a clear enforcement expectation that all welding fume, including mild steel welding fume, should be controlled with effective engineering controls — typically local exhaust ventilation — regardless of duration. This reflects updated international evidence on welding fume and underpins most current UK welding compliance discussions.
Why is welding fume monitoring necessary if we already have extraction?
Extraction tells you what the system is designed to capture; welding fume monitoring tells you what is actually reaching the welder's breathing zone. The two are complementary. Without personal monitoring, residual exposure after controls is assumed rather than known, which is difficult to defend within a COSHH programme.
What does welding fume monitoring involve in practice?
It usually involves personal breathing-zone air sampling on a representative group of welders over a working shift, with laboratory analysis for inhalable welding fume and the relevant metal fractions (for example manganese on mild steel, chromium and nickel on stainless). Results are compared against EH40 Workplace Exposure Limits and reviewed against the existing controls and RPE programme.
How is welding air sampling different from grab sampling?
Welding air sampling on this site refers to time-weighted personal pumped sampling worn by the welder, typically capturing the inhalable fraction with a sampling head positioned in the breathing zone. Short-duration or 'grab' sampling has its place for capture testing or troubleshooting but does not give the shift-average exposure picture used for COSHH comparison.
What is a welding LEV thorough examination and test?
Under COSHH Regulation 9, local exhaust ventilation used to control welding fume must be subject to a thorough examination and test at least every 14 months. The examination checks that the LEV is performing as designed and is effectively controlling exposure. It is a statutory record, not an optional housekeeping task.
Is on-torch extraction enough on its own?
On-torch extraction can be very effective when positioned and operated correctly, particularly on MIG and FCAW. Whether it is enough on its own depends on the process, work geometry, welder technique and the residual exposure picture from monitoring. In many workplaces it sits alongside hood or downdraft capture and a properly specified RPE programme.
When is RPE needed for welding?
RPE is needed where engineering controls alone are not expected to bring exposure below the relevant EH40 Workplace Exposure Limit, or where exposure cannot be reliably assessed. RPE selection should reflect the actual metals in the fume — a programme built only around 'welding fume' as a generic category often under-selects for stainless or nickel-alloy work.
Why is manganese a particular focus on mild steel?
Manganese is present in most steel welding consumables and has a comparatively low Workplace Exposure Limit in EH40. As a result, mild steel welding fume can sit close to or above the manganese WEL without producing an obvious visible cue. This is one of the reasons mild steel welding is no longer treated as a low-risk default.
Why is stainless steel welding fume singled out?
Stainless welding introduces chromium and nickel into the fume, including hexavalent chromium under certain conditions. Cr(VI) is a recognised carcinogen and is treated as a substance to be controlled as far as is reasonably practicable. The COSHH assessment, monitoring scope and RPE selection should all reflect that the metal fume profile is materially different from mild steel.
What about oil mist in engineering workshops?
Where welders share a workspace with CNC machining or metalworking fluid use, oil mist is part of the same air they breathe. Oil mist has its own EH40 Workplace Exposure Limit and is monitored separately from welding fume. In mixed environments we generally recommend treating welding fume and oil mist exposure as one connected programme rather than two separate files.
Do you offer biological monitoring or health surveillance?
No. Our editorial scope is exposure-focused: air monitoring, LEV/extraction, COSHH and EH40 context. Biological monitoring, urine testing, lung function testing and clinical health surveillance sit with occupational health providers and are intentionally out of scope here.
